From production to instrumentation, men traditionally dominate the music industry. According to 2012 estimates by the Women’s Audio Mission, less than five percent of music production and engineering is represented by females. In today’s age of increased awareness of gender-based inequality, the music industry is welcoming a new generation of creators and collaborators to the field.
Women across Colorado are burgeoning into leadership positions, paving the way to create an equal playing field for all genders and talents in the music industry. Colorado has become a state well-known for its up-and-coming independent music scene and its folk music roots. Today Colorado’s female musicians and music industry professionals use their roles as creative, intelligent, and innovative individuals to both champion equality in their careers, and stand as leaders for the young women and girls who aspire to work in a field which has historically been dominated by men.
This project was researched and reported across Colorado’s Front Range from September through December 2014. It aims to highlight women working in Colorado’s music industry serving as clear examples of strong, female leaders and who are paving the way for equality in the music industry’s future.
Sincerest gratitude to my family, friends, teachers, mentors and members of the Colorado music community who contributed to this project. This project would not have been possible without your input, encouragement, and the inspirational words and stories you’ve all shared along the way.
